The test performed by Real Time PCR involves isolating molecules of viral genetic material from material obtained from the patient, and then multiplying, analyzing and assaying them. The optimal time to take the molecular test is the period of viral replication in the epithelium of the upper respiratory tract, which is usually up to 10 days after the onset of clinical symptoms. The Real Time PCR method has the highest sensitivity between 7 and 14 days after SARS-CoV-2 virus infection. After this period, the sensitivity of molecular tests decreases, reaching values of less than 50% after the 14th day of illness.

SARS-CoV-2 VIRUS RNA - who should perform and when?

SARS-COV-2 virus RNA test by Real Time PCR method is recommended to be performed:

• as soon as possible after the appearance of the first symptoms of the disease, as it detects active infection with SARS-CoV-2 virus,
• as a test to confirm the result of a previously performed antigen test.

The test is performed from a nasopharyngeal swab. The sample is taken with a special thin swab by qualified medical personnel of the Point of Collection.

2 hours before the test, it is recommended to refrain from eating, drinking, rinsing the mouth and nose, brushing teeth, smoking, taking medications.
